I am a “formist” –relating to the world of volume and void, haptic and visual. I work in organic materials because they offer a relief, or a counter to the virtual, too often plastic , technologic al and disrupted world we live in.
With the raw materials of wood and stone, I am curious to explore each piece for its unique possibilities, to know where the voids should exist and where the volume needs to be. The process itself begs reflection on the idea of “less is more”. My work emphasizes an old world artisan approach, seldom seen in today’s techno-centric consumer society. The more fleeting “virtual” life becomes, the more I seek the tactile and enduring.
In my carvings, I try to capture human emotions that bind us – universal expressions or subjects that every man or woman can relate to, share and reflect upon. Every piece of wood/stone offers me a subject based on its size, grain/crystalline structure, form and sometimes color. While I may impose a subject onto the piece, I must first study and “see through” it enough to know if it holds such a possibility. A seemingly lifeless, unremarkable block can be made flowing, emotive, figurative, and balanced.
